I have enjoyed working here in the National Waterways Museum as it has boosted my confidence and my self esteem.
I have enjoyed working with all the people in the office as they are always really welcoming and polite. They make you feel as if you are apart of the team, they tend to try and get you involved in every thing thats happening and if your not into one of the things they offer you they will give you some more opions of things to do and the work they give you is always for your needs type thing and it tends to keep you going fr the day.
I will definatley surgest this place to other people. xx
I have volunteered here (National Waterways Museum) for nearly a year now and i have experienced the life in the museum and enjoyed it all very much …… I have done work in the office (Which i am still doing now) which i also love doing as the staff im working with are all great help and very nice people and good to work with as they work hard, help me out when i need help and we all also have a laugh while working (which is always a good thing) I started to do some tour guiding but i didnt go on with that as i didnt have the bottle to do it!!!
I have done an NVQ level 2 in computer work! which is always good to have!!!
I started volunterring last Feb and loved it so much that me and my friend decided to do our own conservation project for a John Muir award. It was great fun organising plants and seeds and doing your bit for the local environment. We made a butterfly trail which attracted many other insects and hopefully makes the area look a lot brighter. At the end of it we got a nice certificate and learnt loads of new skills such as building on my confidance and gaining new ID skills. i would recommend it to anyone who had a few spare hours to get out into the great outdoors!
I have done bits of volunteer work for waterways for about a year and a half. My only regret was that I didn’t have the time to do more as I thoroughly enjoyed every project I worked on inside and outside of the museum. All the co-ordinators, staff at the museum and other volunteers were lovely. I really enjoyed painting the waterways mural in Bootle. It was something different and interesting and everyone worked really hard to get it finished in the time we had. It was also really good for group bonding, It’s always nice how quickly people become friends on all the projects. I wish that I had been able to do more of the conservation work because I was mainly volunteering at events. I hope to carry on volunteering for waterways. The action squad is a great idea and I think that it should carry on in the future giving opportunities for young people to work in the outdoor environment with lovely people and to get awards along the way.
Hope to see you soon,
Best wishes,
Jen.
I have really enjoyed volunteering at the Waterways
Action Squad. I have been since February 2010 and I have worked on conservation projects and at events. I enjoyed working on my John Muir award most as a project, but I also like all the new people I’ve met and chances to do new things. Everyone’s really helpful and friendly and I hope I get do do more volunteering in the future!
I think Waterways Action Squad is a brilliant project, which fully understands the needs and motivations of young volunteers. I really hope that it finds a way to continue as it is an excellent project and a good model to transfer to other places.
My involvement with the Waterways Trust has been around tapping into the volunteer resource. We’re particularly interested in youth engagement and working alongside other groups including excluded sections of our community these initiatives have brought real personal and community benefits. The Youth Involvement Team Leaders have proved both approachable and imaginative – hopefully one day we can meet their aspirations by facilitating equally imaginative projects. They’ve been a delight to work with.
I did voluntary work with the Waterways Action Squad in 2009, helping with marketing activities for the group which I hoped would help me gain experience while in University. The team were incredibly helpful and gave me the freedom to try a variety of different areas of marketing which has been invaluable to me in my job search, as I found work in the marketing department of Moneysupermarket.com.
Not only did my work with the Waterways action squad help me find work, it was also an incredibly rewarding experience and I met some remarkable people. I would recommend it to anyone.
I’ve recently started volunteering at the Waterways Action Squad as part of my university degree. I wanted to join because of its emphasis on young volunteers and the many possibilities available that volunteers have to contribute to the conservation of canals and rivers.
Since I’ve only really worked in the office, my experience of the project as a whole is limited but what I’ve learnt here is that the team really do put us volunteers first, and understand our needs. They are constantly looking for ideas and projects which allow young people to gain experience, build on talents and most of all have fun.
They also also provide free tea and biscuits which I certainly won’t complain about!
As a volunteer myself (sadly a bit older than most WAS members) I really appreciate that so many people have made an effort to volunteer and by doing so have made such a super impact. I work at the National Waterways Museum and see the site full of energetic young people who are making a real difference.
Whether it is the fantastic mural seen from the canal as boats approach the museum, the hedge laying alongside the canal that is a magnificent job, the music’s been great as well or simply the hours spent working in the office and helping to recruit others. To see young people caring about things enough to give their time is an inspiration to us all. WAS and the young people who work with the team has done a great job. I sincerely wish that a way is found to contine this deserving project. What I really like most when i read the comments is to see how many people use the word ‘enjoy’. Volunteering is enjoyable, a win win for everyone. Thanks for the chance to comment.
I have really enjoyed meeting the young volunteers and seeing the valuable contribution they make both to the environment of the waterways but also to other people. Their comments on their experiences are very encouraging and I hope many more people will join and have fun gaining skills and confidence, while helping others.
It has been inspiring to see so many young people willing and eager to be involved in the management and promotion of the waterways. The WAS has provided a way of getting involved that never previously existed. It is great to read the positive comments of the volunteers. Success all round!!!
From the local perspective of the Inland Waterways Association, I can assure you that we view the Waterways Action Squad as a fantastic concept and an excellent way of getting young people involved in the inland waterways generally.
The various projects that the team has undertaken have been innovative and also provided real value for money. However, there is much more to be done and we sincerely hope that the funding can be found to continue – and expand – the projects into other areas as well as our own. We look forward to working with the team in the future and having worked with some of the young people you attract, I know that they really appreciate the opportunities offered as well.
I have been a part of the Waterways Action Squad for 13 months, I enjoy volunteering here as I gained new computer skills, also the people are very polite and get on with them very well. i have also done a nvq business level 2 and i am proud of myself. Also it has helped me become more inderpedent. and I would recommed voluteering to young people. Emma and rest of the have been a great support.
Through volunteering for the Waterways Trust, I got to participate in so many great events, doing something I really enjoy.
I spent a lot of time photographing all the brilliant things that volunteers were doing. I think the Rolt Centenary events were some of my favourite to shoot, it was such a fantastic day, so thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to photograph there
I’ve learnt lots from working with the WAS team and meeting the volunteers who are the biggest part of them.
Thank you to all those who’ve given their time, I know that you’ve made a big impact on the waterways.
Thanks all
What a brilliant bunch of people, every time I’ve worked with the Waterways Action Squad everyone’s been so enthusiastic and keen to get involved, even in the very worst of weather! Well done to everyone for their efforts, the waterways are becoming a much more vibrant and exciting place to visit and work thanks to your efforts!
