Alison and Bethany are two of our long term volunteers. Recently they designed, planned and completed their own biodiversity project to help attract butterflies to the local area of Freemans Copse in Ellesmere Port. Here is their

    acc

    ount:

For our John Muir Explorer Award, we decided to do our project on increasing the Biodiversity of Butterflies in an area along the Shropshire Union Canal near the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum called Freemans Copse. The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages anyone of any age to become aware and responsible for the natural environment, in the spirit of fun, adventure and exploration. With the help of the British waterways Action Squad we aimed to complete our Explorer Award which involved an 8 day commitment to complete 4 aims:

    Discover a

    wild place,

    Explore its wilderness,

    Conserve the wild place,

    Share our experience.

From the 16th February till 14th May we did 8 days work, during these dates we coppiced and thinned Ash, Hazel and Buckthorn and willow trees, in order to let more light into the woodland floor, to attract more butterflies to the area. With the left over branches and trees we cut down we made 8 new habitat piles to attract and encourage invertebrates, hedgehogs, woodlice and beetles. We also cleared paths of litter to make it more accessible to the public and wheelchair friendly in a very urban area. During these dates 3 new volunteers joined us and learnt new skills and had an experience of conservation work. With their help we planted 2 packets of 10g seed and 34 native woodland plants that attract butterflies, this made Freemans Copse a more suitable and sustainable butterfly habitat. Overall the work we did over the 8 days has helped attract a verity of butterflies to the area making it more biodiverse.

We have now given a talk to the Steering group explaining the work we have done, which encouraged them to think about and plan what other work can be done by young volunteers. We are now off to give a talk to the local Brownies about butterflies and try and get them involved in planting at Freemans Copse.

I would recommend anyone doing a John Muir Award, all the info you need is on the John Muir website. You can do different level awards depending on how many days you want to do, from 4-20 days or even 6 months! Just remember to have fun exploring, be creative and help the local environment.

I started volunteering with the Waterways Action Squad in April full time, and I am now officially a very tired lady! But I have found the experience both interesting and rewarding. Everbody here is lovely and welcoming and don’t mind that I am yawning all of the time!

So far I have experienced both the office based and practical sides to the job and have enjoyed both, but found the practical side to be for people of a better fitness level than myself. I have helped plant native trees and litter picked, as wll as uploaded new volunteering opportunities onto the web and helped recruit new volunteers via phone and email. I found the wildlife photography and first aid

    days particularly good.

The relaxed working environment and friendly people means I have found my time here to be very informative whilst also being fun and would recommend giving volunteering with the Waterways Action Squad a bash, even if it’s only once a month!

We are looking for talented young musicians who would like to join in music and songwriting workshops and write some new pieces to celebrate the Waterways (that’s canals and

rivers to you and me) with Tom Kitching fiddle player and canal enthus

iast extraordinaire, and renowned Singer-songwriter Gren Bartley. You can work as a soloist, as an existing band, or create a new act with other volunteers – this will be a great opportunity to meet other musicians and swap ideas.

The workshops start from the beginning of February and will finish with a performance evening between April 22nd – 24th

at the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port.

This is not a beginners course – You should already be able to play or sing to a basic standard, though you don’t need to have done grades. A basic understanding of music theory OR the ability to learn by ear would be useful.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Simon Colderley or Hazel Mayow on 0151 373 4392, or email simon.colderley@thewaterwaystrust.co.uk hazel.mayow@thewaterwaystrust.co.uk
